How to print labels at true size
Most label printing problems happen in the print dialog, not in the PDF. These five steps keep every label where it belongs.
1. Print the test sheet and measure it
Print the test sheet once on plain paper. Both lines must measure exactly 50 mm with a ruler. The grey frames also show how close to the edge your printer can print.
2. Choose “Actual size”
In the print dialog pick “Actual size” or “100%” – not “Fit to page” or “Borderless”. Otherwise the printer shrinks the page by a few percent and the labels drift towards the edges.
3. Pick the right paper
- Full-sheet sticker paper: any size, you cut the labels yourself.
- Pre-cut sheets (e.g. Avery, HERMA): no cutting, but fixed sizes.
- Check the pack: “Inkjet” for inkjet printers, “Laser” for laser printers. Matte paper dries faster than glossy with ink.
4. Test pre-cut sheets first
Print the PDF on plain paper first, lay it on the label sheet and hold both against the light. If the edges line up, print on the label sheet.
5. Cut and stick
On full sheets the labels sit in straight rows: cut the rows into strips first, then the single labels. Wipe the jars grease-free and let the ink dry for a few minutes. Paper labels are not dishwasher-safe.
